Introduction to PCI DSS

The ability to process credit and debit card payments is essential to the success of most merchants. However, the industry is battling a growing problem: the credit card fraud. It has cost card processors, merchants, and in some cases, consumers, billions of dollars. In response, the payment processing industry has initiated a set of security protocols. Called the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS), these protocols were established to help prevent piracy and security breaches in the accounts of consumers.

Aim From the PCI DSS

During the last decade, the majority of fraudulent activity involving small businesses. According to a 2005 study by Visa Inc., USA, at least 80% of cases of fraud can be attributed to the business of small traders. The main objective of the PCI DSS is to limit the activity of the card fraudulent. This is accomplished through a series of measures, including prohibiting traders from storing certain types of information (such as 3 or 4-codes three-digit security).

How it began

Before the PCI DSS was established, each of the major credit card companies had their own security standards for merchants to be held. Promoted their Visa card information security program, while American Express created its Operational Policy on Data Security. MasterCard created the Data Protection protocol of the web, as enacted Discover your information and compliance. Although developed separately, each company had the same goal: to provide consumers with greater protection against fraud. They did so by working with its merchants respective to establish security measures to protect consumer data from the card.

Aware that her effort to increase security with the objective to reduce fraud were consistent, the credit card companies joined forces. In late 2004, the Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) was established. Soon after, the first version of the PCI DSS was developed and released.

Areas of Compliance

The current version of the PCI DSS promotes a series of 6 "control objectives." These include maintaining a secure network, protection of consumer data cards, and implementing measures to reduce vulnerability. They also include restricting access to confidential information, ongoing tests the performance of the network, and the creation of an official policy that addresses information security.

The PCI DSS is expanding these "control objectives" detailing the expectations of the traders to be conducted in each area. When market trends suggest that additional security measures are necessary, updates the PCI DSS.

Problems with the PCI DSS

While the PCI DSS is valuable to the overall protection of consumer credit and data from the debit card, is not without inherent problems. For example, the main reason why most of the fraudulent activity is credit card small business is because most of these traders are uninformed. Card processors often forget to communicate the expectations of PCI DSS for retailers. As a result, many small business owners are unaware of the standards that are expected to comply.

To make matters worse, millions of merchants who do not have a clear understanding about how their own systems for processing cards. In many cases, end up storing data from the card without realizing it. Because smaller merchants are more susceptible to piracy and other violations of safety, storage of these data shows a significant level of exposure for the card industry.

The PCI DSS is relatively new. The Joint Council (PCI SSC) is continuously reviewing trends and identify areas where the current set of safety standards for improvement. Meanwhile, there are encouraging card processors to be more proactive in communicating the terms of compliance to traders. It remains a challenge.
